In 676, after 11 years as Prior of Lindisfarne, Saint Cuthbert retired to the island of Inner Farne to live as a hermit. Cuthbert chose the island for its rugged remoteness, but he would have found solace and companioship from the myriad species of sea birds and other ocean animals that inhabit the island. Except for the two years he served as Bishop of Lindisfarne, Cuthbert would remain on Inner Farne until his death in March of 687. A small chapel and fortified signal tower were constructed near the site of Cuthbert’s hermitage in the late 14th Century.

Experiencing God’s presence in everything around us — in the natural world as well as in the steel and glass of modern life — invites us into a liberating conversation with the eternal. As we reach out to God in prayer, we both express and transcend our personal concerns.
Consider Psalm 145: 10-13.
“All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your faithful shall bless you.
They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom,
and tell of your power,
to make known to all people your mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations."
