While Prior of Lindisfarne (between 665 and 676), Cuthbert reputedly withdrew to pray on this small tidal island adjacent to the priory. Centuries later, another monk would build a small stone shelter on this island for his own private devotions. The cross shown in the photograph on this page honors the prayer of both monks… and the many men and women who have taken time to pray on this island over the centuries.

God draws all the elements of a Christian spiritual life into a single expression of devotion gathered around the Cross. By accepting the living crucified Christ into our lives, we are transfigured into instruments of God’s love as we help transform the world around us.

Consider 2 Corinthians 5: 16-19.

“From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.”
