Saint Cuthbert (c. 634-687 AD), Prior and Bishop of Lindisfarne in what is now northeastern England, was among the most venerated of the early English saints, and his shrine in Durham Cathedral attracted pilgrims for centuries. After being destroyed during the English Reformation, Saint Cuthbert’s shrine was replaced by a stone slab engraved only with the Latin form of his name — Cuthbertus — with this painting of the Risen Christ hanging above the simple tomb.

The loving embrace of the living Christ invites and sustains Christian faith. This gesture of compassion transforms us, allowing us to embrace the different elements of our existence while deepening our commitment to serve Christ and others.

Consider 1 John 4: 16-19.

“God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us.”
